Carcassonne Walled Town is a MUST. Look out for the large FIREWORKS DISPLAY at Le Citi (old city) You are advised to be there early, but leave the car well away from the city limits as the traffic after the display gets grid locked. This spectacular sight on Bastile day - must be seen to be believed. Thousands of people will be there. BEST VIEW is from the old arched bridge looking towards the main street and Old City. Sit on the bridge wall. It starts about 2030 hrs on or around the 14th of July. FANTASTIC but be warned about the traffic.

Irish quit the Cote d'Azur
This was the headline that was in Thursday 25th 2010 "Irish Times -Property Residential" section.
It appears from the article that Irish people under financial pressure at home are trying to release the equity they sank into second homes on the Riviera.Agents like Ennis, of World Homes Investments in Dublin, sold apartments and villas on the Riviera as prices rose between 2000 and the peak in 2008, many by as much as 70 per cent. They have fallen since then, but not by much more than 10 per cent, according to Ennis.
The French property market has proven more stable than others in the world recession, partly because of France’s lending rules. And the Côte d’Azur is one of the most stable French markets because of its popularity with holiday homebuyers around the world. Some locations along it – like the Croisette in Cannes – are fairly impervious to price cuts.
The main market for sales are buyers from the north of France looking for holiday homes, with Italians beginning to come back into the market. Two to three months is the average time it takes to sell a property, says Ennis.
Hilary Larkin of Hilary Larkin Properties, based near Cannes, is another Irish agent who has now switched mainly from selling French holiday homes to re-selling them for mainly Irish and UK buyers. Prices have risen, then fallen, she agrees, but location and other factors determine by how much: Irish people who paid over the odds when the Irish market was at its peak around 2006 may find the value of their property has fallen more than 10 per cent.
The article can be found in full at http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/property/2010/0225/1224265138114.html

Things to do during your holiday
On arrival you will find comprehensive literature to help you get the best out of your holiday. Here’s a taster of what’s on offer:
WALKING
Velvet Cottage is exceptionally well positioned to explore this world-famous area. Indeed, many of the well-documented walks can be enjoyed right from the doorstep!!
A footpath round the side and back of No.1 Abbey Terrace provides access to National Trust owned Velvet Hill. A short but exhilarating walk to the top offers magnificent views of the Llantisilio mountain range to the West, the Horsehoe Pass to the North and the Eglwyseg Rocks and Dinas Bran Castle to the East. Continue on and you reach the source of the Llangollen Canal at the Chainbridge Hotel and the Horseshoe Falls. Nearby is picturesque Llantysilio Church where five generations of owners of Velvet Cottage were married!
Turn right in Abbey Terrace and you quickly arrive at Valle Crucis Abbey. Continue past the Abbey and a pleasant walk takes you to Dinas Bran Castle. Drop down into Llangollen and after a well-earned drink and a little shopping, an easy walk along the canal takes you back to the cottage, either over Velvet Hill or alongside the road.
Turn left in Abbey Terrace and you soon reach a footpath across the fields. The old tram route up to the quarries can easily be seen in the mountainside ahead. After reaching the lane, turn right and left to soon reach the Britannia Inn. A footpath leads up from the left hand side of the pub. From then on, the wilderness of the Llantysilio mountain range is yours to explore!
After a hard day’s exploring, the Abbey Grange Hotel beckons). The hotel, reached by a small footpath across a field, offers excellent food and real ales. We can especially recommend the Sunday carvery. Prepared using local meat and vegetables, it is delicious!!
Continuing 20 minutes further up the valley, the aforementioned Britannia Inn is reached.
For serious hikers, Velvet Cottage lies close to Offa’s Dyke (offas-dyke.co.uk)and the Clwydian Way (clwydianway.co.uk) long distance footpaths, the Dee Valley Way (a fifteen mile footpath between Lllangollen and Corwen) and the tougher North Berwyn Way (also between Llangollen and Corwen).
A very popular way of walking the Dee Valley and North Berwyn Ways is to catch the steam train from either Llangollen or Berwyn up to Corwen, and then walk the route back on either of the routes. More information can be found on deevalleywalks.com.
LLANGOLLEN
Llangollen itself has many well documented attractions. The best resource for up to date information is the Town Council website llangollen.org. Among the highlights are:
Plas Newydd, home of the Ladies of Llangollen.

The Eisteddfod fields, home of the International Music Eisteddfod and many other events throughout the year (visit pavilion-llangollen.com for up to date information).
Llangollen fringe, including Llangollen jazz festival.
SURROUNDING AREA

Green Marketing - good for you and for your sales Riviera Business Club in March
Gilly Lloyd the PR person for The Riviera Business Club - the new name for the British Chamber of Commerce in the Cote d'Azur, France has just sent us new about the March meeting. It is entitled Green Marketing - good for you and for your sales.
It will be held at the Media Garden Hotel in Sophia Antipolis-Valbonne on 25th March at 19.00. A welcome drink will precede the presentation which starts at 19.30.
Thinking and acting green are not only good for the environment and the next generation, they can also help to create better brand positioning. Selling the environmental attributes of products has been a niche marketing strategy for decades, but in recent years, green marketing has gone mainstream.
Fuelled by growing media attention to global climate change and other environmental issues, the demand for "environmentally friendly" products and services has soared. Initiatives include everything from measuring a campaign's carbon footprint to preserving the honeybee population.
The RBC has the honour of welcoming Petra Steinke of Newsbroker, a partner of the ACT Responsible initiative (Advertising Community Together) - a non-profit organisation whose aim is to show the positive role of advertising in today's social and environmental issues.
More information, including how to book, can be found at http://www.cotedazurrental.com/British_chamber_of%20Commerce_cote_d%27azur.htm#GreenMarch

More holiday home rental scams in February 2010
On Saturday 20th February in the early afternoon, over 100 jmlvillas.com property owners received an email enquiry from an applicant called "Frederick" with a Yahoo.co.uk email address.
The enquiries were sent to owners of self catering holiday homes in locations all over France, plus some in Italy and Spain.
Fortunately we are able to receive copy emails that are sent via a response box and have warned the various advertisers that this was most likely not genuine.
The email said "Hello, I need to make a reservation at your place for 2 persons coming to stay in your region for 4 weeks, starting from 20th March to 20th of April 2010. I will need to know your rates per / night for the 2 guests and i will need you to tabulate and let me know the total run-down cost for this 4 weeks period with tax and discounts in Euro currency, so we can arrange for payment. If you do not have availability at the time we request, please let me know when you preferably have availability to accommodate 1 Adults. I will be very grateful if you can get back to me as soon as possible. Thanks"
We replied "We believe this is not a genuine enquiry, we believe it to be a scam rental. You are targeting owners all over France,Italy and other countries. So far today have sent out over 100 of these useless enquiries. Please do not do this anymore. We are considering reporting you to the authorities at Yahoo.co.uk Thanks"
We copied the reply back to the owners and received some thank you emails from advertisers thanking us for bringing it to their attention.
This problem has been going on since 2004 and we have created several pages for owners of self catering holiday homes pn the euro-rentavilla.com website - http://www.euro-rentavilla.com/rental_scams_in_holiday_home_lettings.htm Do take great care if you have a holiday home that you are advertising as people have lost money to these fraudsters.

French Riviera covered in Snow
Pictured on the left is a swimming pool that is slightly cooler than normal. Snow hit the French Riviera in the last week and this secene was typical and the property is located only 2.5 km from the sea.
We received an email news sheet from The Riviera Times on Friday 12th February.
They said" While most of our northern neighbours are only just recovering from snow and blizzards, the Riviera is bursting with life and colour under an azure blue sky...
This is how we opened our feature article for The Riviera Times this month, anticipating, as we were, the wondeful winter sunshine that we have become accustomed to in this part of the world.
Sometimes, however, current events can prove even the best weather forecasters wrong.
Because anyone who took their cars on the roads yesterday - in the Var, the Alpes Maritimes or Monaco - couldn't fail to feel the full force of winter as the region was hit by a freak snow storm. The icy temperatures proved that even the sunny south is not safe from the Big Chill that is currently sweeping across Europe."

At Nice airport, some flights were diverted to Marseilles or Rome. So it looks like the residents of the Riviera have experienced weather conditions that have gripped north America and most of Europe since late December.

The Palm Tree Lodge Canterbury at jmlvillas.com
The Palm Tree Lodge in Canterbury, Kent, England has was added to jmlvillas.com and engliscottagerental.com yesterday. A day - 11th February 2010 - when the south east of England - Kent was very much in the news with nine inches of snow in the Dover Folkestone area and delays for traffic using the Channel Tunnel.
Situated in the small hamlet of Wingmore, in the heart of the Elham Valley is The Palm Tree Lodge, a secluded 2 bedroom self contained holiday cottage which can accomodate for up to 6 people. The Elham Valley stretches from the Coast through to the historic Cathedral City of Canterbury and is within both an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a Special Lanscape Area.
The Lodge was once part of The Palm Tree House, an eyecatching property of symetrical front elevations and fascinating interior features. The property is grade II listed and since the mid eighteenth century had been functioning as an Inn. The Inn was de-licensed in 2009 and whilst a number of facilities remain that clearly identify the property as an Inn, it is now enjoyed as a property of residence.
Like most Inns, the property is set on the road although the Lodge itself is set round the back of the Inn and enjoys views up and down the valley and adjorns onto surrounding farmland.
There are a wealth of footpaths and cycle routes leading away from the Lodge and it is approximately mid-way between the villages of Elham and Barham, which both offer a good local shop, pubs and restaurant facilities and they are both reachable within a couple of miles. About 1,000 yards down the road from the lodge is a vineyard and tearooms, where tours & wine tasting can be arranged. There is also a plant centre, a shop selling wine and crafts, and the tearoom serves home baking, light lunches and cream teas. Wider facilities are provided by the Cathedral City of Canterbury, with its excellent shopping centre, sporting and recreational opportunities and is about 11 miles away.
There are 2 Golf Courses nearby at Broome Park and Etchinghill. Within 12 miles there is also the Royal St Georges PGA Links golf course which is at Sandwich. The coast is approximately 13 miles away and the best beaches are at Margate and Dymchurch, which are both sandy beaches. There is a county cricket ground in Canterbury and horse racing down at the coast in Folkestone.
There are many places to visit in and around Canterbury. You could visit Canterburys Cathedral, take a historic river boat tour down the river stour. Visit the Canterbury Tales and step into medieval Canterbury and accompany Geoffrey Chaucer and his colourful Pilgrims as they make their magical pilgrimage from London to the shrine of Thomas Becket in the Cathedral. Walk and Explore Canterbury with costumed characters ready to tell you the myths and legends and how about taking a ghost tour.
Canterbury also has a theatre and many excellent restaurants. Coming out of the City visit the lions and tigers at Howletts Animal Park or take an offshore tour to see the Maunsell Forts and the seals in the seas off Herne Bay & Whitsable. See the Roman painted house in Dover and spend a day a Dover Castle. There also are many museums in Canterbury and out at Hawkinge there is the Spitfire museum.
A bus service, which stops alongside The Palm Tree House, runs along the Elham Valley between Canterbury and Folkestone and the Lodge is well placed for both the M2 and M20 motorways. There are also regular train services to London from Sandling and Canterbury. For connections to the Continent, the Lodge is within easy each of the Eurotunnel terminal at Folkestone, the Port of Dover and Ashford International for Eurostar.
The History of The Palm Tree.
The origins of this property go back nearly 300 years when it was built as a Georgian Farmhouse. In 1735 the owner was granted a license to sell ales from the premises, but was restricted to the sale of ales and cider only.
The house remained 'un-named' until the property was sold to Thomas Sancraft in 1753 who registered the house as the "Whyte Hause" or "White Horse". In 1758 the property was granted a full license where it thrived both as an Inn and as a saddlers and harness makers, before being sold in 1806 to Josiah Cressy.
Josiah Cressy was a seaman of Folkestone and had travelled extensively. Although not recorded as such, local account has it that Cressy had been aboard one of Captain James Cook's ships as they explored the globe, and in particular the Hawaiian Islands where sight of Palm Trees was first noted. Cressy renamed the house and registered it under the title of the "Palm Tree" in 1812, no doubt to remind him of some far distant shore that he had visited.
The property is set on the banks of the 'Nail Bourne' which winds along the Elham Valley. The valley has long been a corridor connecting the Ports of Dover and Folkestone through to the historic Cathedral City of Canterbury, and as such has been a busy trade and passage way over the Centuries. It was around here that King John camped with 50,000 men in preparation for war with France in 1214, and the Duke of Wellington camped 18,000 troops along the valley in 1799 awaiting embarkation during the Napoleonic Wars.
It is its many legends about smuggling however that have influenced the property and its owners the most. There are many stories and local tales associating the property with local gangs and smugglers using the property as a meeting place and hostelty, either hiding from customs or dividing their spoils.
One tale of events involving smuggling in 1748 was when a local gang brought a large cargo of brandy, tea and rum over from France. Customs were particularly displeased and managed to capture a number of the gang. One of the gang members however was able to give an alibi for his captured colleague.
Whilst relaying the alibi to the customs official in this very Inn however, a local informer saw the two talking and mistaking this as treachery, the remaining gang members hunted them down, allegedly lacing their drinks until they were sleepy. The two men were flogged and tied to a horse, before the customs officer was buried. The disloyal gang member was made an example of however and thrown head first down the well. It was perhaps this link with navel tales, legal or otherwise that attracted Cressy as a landlord and the appearance of the property today.
This sounds like a facinating place to take a self catering holiday vacation.

BCC Riviera Goes International
The BCC (British Chamber of Commerce) Riviera has a new look for the new year. It has taken the decision to undergo a name change, and will now be known as the Riviera Business Club - the network for international business people.
Whilst the organisation will still be backed by the BCC, it is felt that the new name will better reflect the growing international composition of the club’s membership - and help to broaden its reach across a part of France which attracts a wide range of nationalities.
Speaking at the recent AGM, Ab Kuijer, President and initiator of the new Business Club, explained the rationale behind this decision. “We’d like the organisation to be ‘nationality neutral’, to encourage business people from all parts of the world to join.
If you come to France from Argentina, for example, you might feel that you wouldn’t qualify for membership of a British Chamber of Commerce, but you’d probably feel more comfortable approaching an international business club - and it’s this sort of hurdle that we want to remove. We’d like business people of any nationality, who are living and running their businesses on the Riviera, to feel welcome.”
This decision was unanimously adopted by the members who attended the AGM, and a new web address has already been registered: www.rivierabusinessclub.com. Those accessing this site will automatically be directed to the existing website, which will soon take on the new branding.
The AGM was held at the Media Garden Hotel in Sophia Antipolis on 22nd January, followed by a luncheon for members and friends. A review of the successful events which had taken place during 2009 preceded a preview of some of those planned for this year. Topics to be covered include Making your own website in 15 minutes, Green Marketing brings new clients, Social Media; what is your strategy? and How to start up/maintain your business in France.
jml-Training and Consultancy (www.jml-training.com ) and jml Property Services ( www.jml-property.co.uk ) are members of the BCC Riviera. They welcome the news of the change of name to the Riviera Business Club.
